What is green living and how is it accomplished?
Green living is making choices that lower negative impact on the environment that we all share. This can be as simple as changing home lighting from incandescent to low wattage compact fluorescent lamps, or as complex as commercial and residential construction using green building products and techniques.
Our Mission
Green Shaman is dedicated to helping people empower themselves to live greener lives by providing practical information that can help foster an ecologically sound change in lifestyle.
Giving Back
Reduce - Reuse - Recycle. Generations of environmental abuse are taking their toll on our planet. It's time to give back so that future generations can continue to use and reuse what our fragile earth provides.
Eco Friendly Fabric
As public awareness about changes in our environment grows, the need to live in a more sustainable manner is taking on new meaning. More and more people are examining the choices that they make in their lifestyle in an effort to minimize their imprint on our planet. Alternative energy, organic food and low emission vehicles are strategies that many have chosen to embrace. The use of ecologically friendly fabric is also gaining wider acceptance.
More eco friendly fibers, organic as well as synthetic, are being used to weave cloth today than ever before. The clothing and other cloth goods manufactured from these sources are of the highest quality and offer the textures and durability that we have come to expect from these products. Conventionally produced cotton is one of the most popular fabrics in use today. The cultivation of this crop accounts for the introduction of tremendous amounts of commercial insecticide into the ecosystem. The manufacturing process and raw material used in many synthetic fibers also adversely affect our environment. Fortunately, alternatives are available. The following list of eco friendly fabrics is offered to help you make informed environmentally sound choices in the fabric used to produce the garments you wear...
Energy
Conventional Power
Conventionally generated electrical power represents the majority of electricity consumed it the United States. This source of power contributes incalculably to the prosperity enjoyed by this nation and many other nations throughout the world. We are all dependent on technologies powered by electricity generated in this manner. Day to day life as we know it would be impossible without it. Unfortunately, this process is a significant source of air pollution and green house gas emissions. Finite nonrenewable fuel sources such as coal, oil, natural gas and nuclear fuels are consumed in this manner of electrical production and cannot be replaced.
Renewable Energy
Renewable energy sources have a dramatically less significant impact on our environment. These resources are reliant on naturally occurring energy flows such as flowing water, wind and solar radiation to produce electricity, thereby significantly reducing the pollutants and green house gas emissions associated with conventional electrical production. To be considered renewable energy the fuel source used in the generation process must be replenished by natural processes at a rate that is equal to or greater than the rate at which the fuel is consumed. Examples of renewable energy production methods include wind energy, solar power, geothermal, biogas, biomass and low impact hydro generation. At present, approximately 2.3% of all electrical power produced in the United States is considered renewable...
Organic Foods
Today’s consumers are aware of organic food and know that there are tangible positive benefits associated with it. Many consumers however are unaware of what constitutes organic food and the farming practices employed to produce it. This article will offer basic information on these topics.
Organic farming eliminates the introduction of many toxic elements into the ecosystem that are commonly used in conventional farming. Consumers benefit by having access to food products that are free of synthetic pesticides, antibiotics and hormones. Additional benefits to the consumer include the knowledge that they are effecting positive change in the environment through the choice of foods they purchase.
As of October 21, 2002, standards set forth by the U. S. Department of Agriculture stipulate that food labeled “organic” as well as the farming methods used to produce it must meet strict governmental standards. These regulations include domestically produced food as well as food imported from other lands. The implementation of these regulations assures the consumer organic food that is uniform throughout the market place, and maintains the quality of the environment for generations to come...
